Fijian flanker Dominiko Waqaniburotu has been handed a three match ban after he was cited for a dangerous spear tackle on South African Patrick Lambie in the match between the two teams last weekend. This probably heralds the end of Waqaniburotu’s World Cup campaign it is unlikely Fiji will progress to the semi-final stage at which point he would have completed his ban. It also means that he will miss Fiji’s must-win round-robin games against Samoa and Wales.

Now you see him, now you don’t. Having returned for a couple of matches for the Wallabies, winger James O’Connor is due to sit out their next encounter against the USA. It’s probably more a precautionary measure as an MRI scan on the winger indicated only a minor strain, yet with the punishing games being played in this World Cup it’s no surprise teams are resting players when they can.
